BICHOLIM: Bicholim Police on Friday detained Goa Forward Party Mayem candidate Santoshkumar Sawant along with several locals for halting the transportation of mineral ore dump through Mayem village.
It is pertinent to note that the transportation of mineral ore dump is going on through Shirgao via Mayem village. Some days back, the villagers had protested demanding that their trucks be employed for transportation of mineral ore dump.
The truck owners led by Santoshkumar blocked the traffic and demanded that the trucks from their village be engaged in transportation of mineral ore dump instead of trucks from outside the village.
“We are demanding that the local trucks should be employed and given some work instead of the company employing outside trucks. They are also transporting the mineral ore dump through Mayem village when there is a jetty nearby,” Santoshkumar said.
The farmers from the village also supported the agitation demanding that the company should provide them compensation for destroying their fields.
As the agitators did not leave, they were detained by the police and later released in the evening.
