Mayem votes 30 to 9 to oppose new liquor bars

BICHOLIM:  A resolution not to allow any more liquor bars in Mayem village was passed by a margin of 30-9 votes during the gram sabha of Mayem village panchayat held on Sunday.
During gram sabha, which was held under the guidance of Sarpanch Vijay Pole, Mayem villagers vociferously opposed the permission to new liquor bars and also demanded to shut down illegal bars.
When some youth present started moves demanding permission to open new liquor bars, the President of Bharat Swabhimaan Kamlakant Tari raised an objection and told that Bharat Swabhimaan would not allow giving permission to more liquor bars.
Former sarpanch Sakharam Pednekar also supported Tari saying there are already 39 legal and 21 illegal bars in Mayem village; hence, allowing more bars in Mayem is as good as allowing the people to die after consuming liquor.
When those favouring more bars persisted with their argument, the villagers demanded a voting on the issue. Accordingly, secret voting was conducted in which the resolution opposing bars was passed by 30 to 9 votes.
