Mayor Furtado sets priorities for CCP Commissioner

Writes to Roy seeking urgent action on pending issues

PANJIM: Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado has written to Commissioner Ajit Roy seeking urgent action in pending issues such as expediting eviction of the promoters of National Theatre as well as Panjim Animal Welfare Society from the animal shelter at St Inez.
Furtado has stated that former Commissioner Deepak Desai had failed to act on the matters despite several reminders.
“The ex-commissioner was sought to take urgent action which was not acted upon so far inspite of my reminders to him on many occasions. The new Commissioner is requested to call for these files and take urgent action in the interest of the Corporation of City of Panjim (CCP) and to generate income for this local body to make it self sufficient and one of the ideal institutions in the State of Goa,” states the Mayor’s letter to Roy.
The first issue on the list is the execution of leave & licence agreements with the legal tenants/occupiers in the municipal market. Furtado stated that the Commissioner had initiated action to evict the illegal occupiers of the market for the last three years ‘but the action is haphazard and not effective as not in a single case eviction of the public premise has taken place’. The Mayor alleged that illegal occupiers are fearlessly carrying out their trade, while seeking that the CCP Commissioner – who is notified as the Estate Officer – act against them.
“There is a contempt petition filed by some citizens of Panjim for non recovery of rent from the tenants of the market and the losses suffered by the CCP. However, the ex-Commissioner was dodging the case and not taking any concrete action,” he added.
In a fresh development, Furtado, on September 20 had written to the Directorate of Municipal Administration asking to expedite government approval on the modified Leave & License agreement.
