Mayor Furtado wants “someone” to run CCP’s administration

Can’t Commissioner run it, asks a corporator; Furtado avoids direct answer

A full-time commissioner is an issue that the Corporation of the City
of Panaji Mayor Surendra Furtado has been harping on for a long
time. He has written to the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar asking
for a full-time commissioner for the corporation recently. Arguing
that “In the interest of smooth and efficient functioning of the Corporation of
the City of Panaji, I would hereby request you to appoint Shri Sanjit Rodrigues
as a full-time Commissioner,” the letter says, adding, “I have learnt that Shri
Sanjit Rodrigues is the Managing Director of the Goa State Infrastructure
Development Corporation, because of which he is overburdened with too
many departments.’At the CCP meeting on Monday, the Mayor,
though not directly hitting out at the commissioner
– who was seated next to him – asked his
corporators for somebody to run the administration.
“I want someone to run this… I want someone
to collect revenue and run the administration,”
Furtado said prompting corporator Rudresh
Chodankar to ask “You mean the Commissioner cannot run this?”
The Mayor did not rise to this just repeating “I want the administration to
run smoothly,” he said.
Earlier, in his letter the Mayor, alleging that the reason that the GSIDC
duties of the commissioner could be the reason why he “as such, finds little
time to attend to CCP matters and thus reports for duty only after office
hours. Residents of Panjim come with their grievances to the Commissioner
but have to wait for the full day and go empty-handed.’
He argued that there are urgent matters to be sorted, so he wanted him
to relieve him of his appointment as MD, GSIDC so that “he can devote his
full-time as the Commissioner of the City of Panaji or he can attend to the
GSIDC after office hours.”
