Mechanise sewerage cleaning to save lives of workers: Panel

PANJIM: With nearly hundred people losing their lives cleaning sewers across India last year, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) has stressed upon the need to introduce mechanised way to undertake sewerage work. 
The member of NCSK, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Manju Diler was in Goa to review the welfare measures, facilities, compensation, schemes implemented thereof for the welfare of sewerage workers in the State. 
During the meeting, Diler stressed on the need to stop manual sewerage work and replace the same with mechanised cleaning. 
Directions were issued to the government authorities to ensure that the safety equipments are provided to the workers.
, while on duty and necessary infrastructure too is in place in case of emergency.  
“Apart from these the issue of minimum wages of workers of Sulabh International, the latest development of laying of sewerage pipe line in different areas in the state was also discussed,” government said in a press statement issued.
The meeting was attended by North Goa Collector, Director of social welfare, Municipal Administration, CCP Commissioner, Deputy Labour Commissioner and others.
