The ruling BJP-MGP-GVP alliance has together won 13 out of the 25 seats, giving them a wafer thin majority in the South Goa district Panchayat body.
Sources in the know said that BJP Davorlim ZP elect Ulhas Tuenkar and Rivona ZP elect Navnath Naik may stake claim for the coveted post. Two-time Chairperson and GVP elect Nelly Rodrigues may also stake her claim given her 15-year experience in the Zilla Panchayat body.
While Ulhas is three-time Rumdamol sarpanch and had been a co-opted member of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat in the past, Navnath Naik was the vice-chairperson in the outgoing body, and now a two-time member of the Zilla Panchayat.
In the meantime, the Independents are closely monitoring the situation with the ruling alliance securing a wafer thin majority in the South Goa ZP body. They are expected to meet in a day or two to decide their strategy how to go about in the election of the chairperson, especially in view of the fact that the alliance government is ruling the state.
Some of the Independent candidates in private, however, said that the BJP-MGP alliance have made a backdoor entry into South Goa ZP with the government merging Ponda taluka into the South Goa
district.
