‘Mend your ways, third eye is watching you’

Curti-Khandepar VP installs CCTV cameras to keep a check on illegal garbage menace

PONDA: The incidents of dumping garbage by the roadside has decreased drastically due to initiative of the Curti-Khandepar Village Panchayat to install CCTV cameras in the panchayat jurisdiction, last year.

The Curti-Khandepar Village Panchayat had installed 13 CCTV cameras in the panchayat area, since then the number of incidents of dumping garbage in these areas have reduce drastically.

The panchayat had spent around Rs 7 lakh to put up the cameras at Haveli, Nagzar and other places as these areas were targeted the most.

The locals stopped dumping the garbage there with fear of being fined. Interestingly, only one person was fined Rs 2,000 in a year since the installation of CCTV cameras.

With the installing of cameras, the panchayat had cautioned people to mend their ways and stop throwing garbage by the roadside, so as to avoid lefty fines imposed by the local body.

However, the people have now started to dump garbage by the roadside at Kelbaay and Koparwada. Some days back, locals had caught few people red-handed dumping the garbage at Kerye.

“The people have stopped dumping garbage where CCTV cameras are in place. But it’s been observed that they have now started to dirty the roads at Kelbaay and Koparwada. This will attract more stray cattle and dogs. Not to mention that residents will have to bear with foul smell too. There is now a need to install cameras in these areas,” said former sarpanch Bhika Kerkar.
