PANJIM: The Mapusa Police on Monday arrested a 21-year-old man from Chhattisgarh for allegedly raping a mentally challenged woman.
According to the police, the victim’s mother lodged a complaint stating that her 31-year-old daughter was lured by the accused saying that he would get her Pan Masala.
The accused took the victim with him, wrongfully confined her in his room and had forcible sexual intercourse with her, the police said.
A case under section 342, 376 (2) (I) of IPC and Section 92-D of Right of Persons with Disabilities Act was registered at Mapusa Police Station.
Under leadership of Mapusa DySP JivbaDalvi, PI Shitakant Nayak constituted different teams with instructions to collect the intelligence about the accused involved. After thorough human and technical surveillance, the accused Vijay, a resident of Gaunsawado, Mapusa, Bardez, was arrested.
Earlier on Sunday night, the victim’s mother had approached the Mapusa police to file a missing complaint. But she received a phone call informing that her daughter has returned home. When she enquired, the daughter told her the sordid incident.
Meanwhile, the medical examination has confirmed that the victim had been raped, the police said.
The accused has been remanded in police custody, police said, adding further investigation is in progress under the guidance of Mapusa PI Shitakant Nayak and overall supervision of Dy SP Jivba Dalvi.
