PANJIM: Merces sarpanch Pramod Kamat along with panchayat member and villagers on Wednesday inspected the dumping of construction debris in khazan lands at Murda, Merces and said they were shocked to see the damage done to the environment.
Kamat said that he suspected that debris might have been dumped by the contractors carrying out Smart City works thereby destroying the environment which in turn might result into natural calamities which the villagers of may have to face.
Kamat said, “When we reached the site at Murda, we were shocked to see khazan land bunds were filled with debris all around. More than 200 trucks must have been unloaded in this illegal activity.”
Stating that he was distressed to see the site, Kamat recalled that a few months back, a villager from Carmibhat had drowned in the pond situated nearby. But no debris were found dumped on that day but the picture was completely different now.
“It is a thumb rule that as we destroy nature, we destroy ourselves,” Kamat said, appealing to concerned authorities to book the culprits since such huge khazan land filling was not an overnight act or without anyone’s blessing.
Ward member Sushant Govekar, panchayat secretary Vipin Korgaonkar, Comunidade attorney, locals and and environmentalists were present during the inspection.
