PANJIM: A special meeting of the Merces village panchayat has been convened at 11 am on Tuesday, January 9, to discuss the no-confidence notice tabled by eight panchayat members against sarpanch Pramod Kamat.
The signatories to no-confidence notice are deputy sarpanch Suchita S Amonkar, Sushant Govekar, Walter L D’Souza, Assis J M Fernandes, Rakesh E Fatarpekar, Mukesh M Shirgaonkar, Celia V Sequeira and Filomenta G Pereira. The panchayat comprises 11 members.
Kamat, who is also the president of Santa Cruz Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mandal was elected sarpanch on July 8 last year.
However, sarpanch Pramod Kamat said that the no-trust against him was surprising as he had always taken all the 11 panchayat members into confidence regarding any development works.
Kamat said during his tenure as panch and sarpanch, he had tried to resolve various issues faced by the village panchayat. He said he did not discriminate with the panchayat members while carrying out work and added that it surprised him that in spite of doing so much, a no confidence notice was tabled against him.
“If the panchayat members had grievances against me then they should have conveyed it to Rahul Tendulkar. There was no need to move no-confidence and show that there is a division among ourselves,” he said.
Kamat said if Rahul Tendulkar, who gave him an opportunity to serve the people as a sarpanch, asks him to step down, he will not hesitate to do so. “There was no need to show that there are differences among us. I do not know why they have moved the no-confidence notice against me,” he said.
