PANJIM: The Goa Observatory of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of warmer days following the equinox on Monday. IMD also predicted hot days in April, considering that the sun would be ‘overhead’ of the State, giving the maximum heat.
During an equinox – March 21 and September 22 – the sun is at its zenith over the equator and days and nights are generally of equal length. During those two days the sub solar point, the area where the Sun’s rays shine perpendicular to the Earth’s surface, or a right angle, is directly on the Equator.
Speaking to media persons, IMD Goa director VK Mini said that during this period the temperature is expected to range between 34 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius in Goa. “The first week of April, when the sun would be overhead of Goa, will have the highest temperature,” she explained.
She said the current hot spell can cause a heat wave if temperature exceeds 35 degrees Celsius for the next two consecutive days. “On Sunday, the maximum temperature recorded was 33.6 degrees Celsius and so also on Monday,” she said.
Till date, Valpoi has recorded the highest day temperature of 39 degrees Celsius.
