PONDA: Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), which is being revived, aims to regain the power it enjoyed for over a decade after Goa’s liberation.
MGP Central Committee President Deepak Dhavlikar said in a bid to strengthen the party, MGP has formed 30-member committees in majority of the constituencies.
Presently, MGP has three MLAs in the State assembly and two of them are the ministers.
“Questions are being raised on MGP-BJP coalition dharma, but our aim is to strengthen the party and keeping in mind its future and we have already started the work,” said Dhavlikar after declaring the MGP committee for Sanquelim constituency at a function at Ponda.
Pale Sarpanch Mahesh Gawas has been appointed as president of MGP’s Sanquelim constituency committee.
Dhavlikar, who is also the minister for cooperation, said, “We have already formed 30-member committees in 22 constituencies and we will soon appoint committees in the remaining constituencies. By December, we will conduct election for the State Central Committee.”
To a query whether MGP plans to regain power, Dhavlikar said, “We hope the coalition (BJP-MGP) will work for at least 10 years and later in politics anything can happen. We have been receiving good support from the public, especially from the youth.”
“After Goa’s liberation, MGP was in power. However over the years, all know what happened and efforts from politicians to finish MGP did not succeed,” he added.
Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar, who is also general secretary of MGP’s State Central Committee, said people from Salcete have expressed willingness to join MGP and committees will be appointed soon.
“There is good response from the people of Salcete and we will form a 30-member committee in Benaulim constituency and later rest of the constituencies will be covered,” he said.
