PONDA: The extra-ordinary general body meeting of MGP on Sunday unanimously resolved to adopt the amendments suggested by its six-member committee.
While the party name has not been changed, but instead of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party it will be now referred as MGP or the Mago Paksha.
“There were queries as to why the name Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, but we will not change it and instead it will be referred as MGP or Mago Pakshya,” stated PWD and Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar.
According to information, a couple of months back the six-member committee headed by MGP President Deepak Dhavlikar had suggested amendments to the constitution of the MGP, the oldest regional party which came into existence in 1963.
“We thought to amend the party constitution keeping in mind the need of the hour. Amendments are made to give more powers to its members and I expect support from you (MGP members),” said Deepak Dhavlikar, who is also the Minister for Cooperation.
According to new amendments, the references to Daman and Diu and also the Gujarati language have been deleted, which were included in the party’s constitution when Goa, Daman and Diu was a union territory.
The new amendment also suggests sending text messages or inform telephonically; its committee members regarding meetings as members felt the postal service has become outdated.
The new amendments have suggested increasing the number of Working Committee members from 56 to 75, of which nine members will be nominated and 30 member constituency committees.
The new amendment gives representation to the elected representatives from panchayats, municipal councils and Zilla Panchayats in the working committee as well as general body meetings.
It was also decided to have one vice-president and two joint secretaries in the 16-member central committee of the MGP. The party membership fees have been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 20.
