PANJIM, DEC 20
The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) wants to amend its Constitution to enable the party president to hold government posts and decision to this effect was taken at a party meeting held on Saturday.
If  effected,   the amendment  would  enable  Sudin Dhavalikar, who is the cabinet minister in Kamat-led coalition government, to take over as the president  of  MGP, which is not possible under the current  provisions  of  the Constitution  of  the party.
Currently, Constitution of the party disallows the president from holding dual posts.
The MGP President Deepak Dhavalikar when contacted said no major changes were made in the Constitution since inception  47 years ago and it had gone very old.
“Amendment is sought to be made for equal distribution of Central committee and working committee,”  said Dhavalikar who took  over the reigns  of the party from Pandurang Raut, who resigned as party president earlier this year and joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
The amendment in the Constitution is basically aimed to reduce the concentration of power in just one authority.
A member committee headed by Dr Narayan Sawat has been constituted to draft amendments and submit its report within three months to the Central Committee, he added.
Other members of the committee include Appa Teli and Ratnakant  Mardolkar.
Amendment  is  to endow preliminary members with voting right as now only members of the general assembly have right to vote.
The general assembly consists of 1200 members.
