PANJIM: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), New Delhi has asked both the District Magistrates to inquire into the matters related to acquisition of citizenship of another country by the residents of Goa and make appropriate recommendations to the Government of India, in accordance with the given procedure.
The order issued by the MHA Joint Secretary Sumant Singh shall remain in force for a period of two years from the date of publication of notification.
Both, the North Goa and South Goa District Collectors (DCs) have been asked to first invite the applicants, conduct inquiry in a fair and transparent manner as per the provisions contained in the Citizenship Act and the Citizenship Rules, 2009 and then to make recommendation to the Union government giving details of each case.
It may be noted that many Goans have been surrendering the Indian citizenship and acquiring Portuguese citizenship mostly for job prospects in Europe. However, there are details about the number of such people acquiring Portuguese citizenship and surrendering their Indian citizenship including passports.
