MAYEM: The next hearing on the water dispute before the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal in New Delhi will take place on Thursday.
It may be recalled that the Tribunal, headed by Justice J M Panchal, had begun the first hearing on March 4, after it had visited the areas affected in Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka in December 2013.
In a bid to avoid any kind of complication during the election period, counsel for Karnataka, Fali Nariman, had requested the Tribunal to schedule the hearing on April 17.
Following the date of the hearing, Goa WRD Chief Engineer Sandeep Nadkarni, Superintendent Engineer Srikant Patil and WRD advisor of Mahdei dispute Chetan Pandit have been camping at New Delhi.
It may be also recalled that the Goa’s Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni had put forth strong arguments before the tribunal during the last hearing and had requested the tribunal to stop the diversion of Kalsa water to Malaprabha till the final argument in this case is heard.
Similarly, Maharashtra government has also raised its objection regarding the Haltara project being undertaken by Karnataka, due to which Goa may get the additional support.
Incidentally, Karnataka has continued work on the Kalsa canal at Kankumbi despite strong opposition from Goa.
