Mhadei fallout: Cong to launch taluka-level protests

PANJIM: Alleging that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was part of the “conspiracy” against Goa in the Mhadei river water diversion matter, Congress announced its plan to launch taluka-level demonstration ‘to expose the double stand of the BJP governments’ on the contentious issue.
The central government last week granted its consent to Karnataka’s Kalasa-Banduri alleged drinking water project. The move was strongly opposed by a cross section of society in Goa including political leaders. Chief Minister in a letter to MoEF&CC Minister Prakash Javadekar demanded that the consent be withdrawn immediately.
Addressing media persons, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar charged that Goa Chief Minister was well aware and part of the conspiracy played by BJP on the people of Goa in Mhadei matter.
“Chief Minister was part of the decision. He was consulted. How can he not be consulted when BJP is ruling at the Centre and also in Karnataka? The Chief Minister should not fool the people,” he said.
Congress has appealed to all the opposition, NGOs and concerned citizens to join their ‘People Agitation’ against BJP government double speak on Mhadei.
In the first phase, Congress will launch a demonstration across all five talukas in North Goa starting with Pernem on Friday. A memorandum will be submitted to the Deputy Collector demanding that Centre be asked to immediately withdraw consent granted to Kalasa-Banduri project.
Congress will also create awareness amongst people on the importance of River Mhadei and consequences if the water is diverted.
Congress will also hold street plays as a part of its awareness programme.
