At a time when the State government has been busy in COVID-19 management and had gone under lockdown, there appears to have been attempts to divert the water from the Mhadei basin to the Malaprbha basin.
TEAM HERALD hit ground zero at Kankumbi, across the border, and what it witnessed was startling. Team Herald visited the site from where the water diverts towards Goa at Kankumbi and what was witnessed was startling. The canal flowing towards Goa was almost dry despite the heavy rains and the River Mhadei is actually flowing in reverse direction. Stagnant water could be seen at many places in the canal which leads to Goa.
At one point in Kankumbi, the river takes a U-turn as the stream towards Goa has been blocked with mud, rocks, and stones. As a result water is just trickling towards Goa and it would not take much time for River Mandovi to dry out now. The result is that the river, instead of flowing towards Goa, is now going towards the Malprabha basin.
