Mhadei matter fails to come before Supreme Court yet again

PANJIM: The special leave petition (SLP) filed by the State government challenging the Mhadei Disputes Tribunal’s award over allocation of water by three riparian States did not come for hearing in the Supreme Court yet again on Wednesday.

The cause list for Thursday, December 7 has also not listed the case for hearing even as the Goa’s legal team are keeping their fingers crossed.

The matter had also failed to come up for hearing last week too after being listed for two days.

According to information available, Goa’s SLP was listed sixth in the list but the Court heard only first matter listed in the cause list that too related to Karnataka’s forest department and there was every possibility that it would continue on Thursday.

The SLP filed by the Goa government in July 2019 was last heard in July this year. Goa government has challenged the decision of the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal (MWDT) granting Karnataka 13.42 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) of water for its Kalasa-Bhandura drinking water-cum- irrigation project. The Tribunal Award was announced on August 14, 2018.

Besides SLP, the State government had also filed a contempt petition against the Karnataka government for illegally diverting water from the Mhadei river basin.
