Mhadei matter now listed in Supreme Court on Jan 10

Besides the two contempt petitions filed by Goa, Apex Court to hear applications filed by Karnataka and Maharashtra

PANJIM: After failing to get the matter to come up for hearing before the Supreme Court, the two contempt petitions filed by the State government against the Karnataka government for illegally diverting Mhadei river water has now been posted for hearing before the Apex Court on Wednesday, January 10.

As per the daily cause list, the matter will come up for hearing before Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta in Court No 2.

Besides the two contempt petitions filed by the Goa government in 2018 and 2019, the Apex Court will also hear the applications filed by the Karnataka and Maharashtra governments.

The Goa government has also filed a special leave petition (SLP) challenging the Mhadei Disputes Tribunal’s award over allocation of water by three riparian States.

The matter was earlier twice listed for hearing for two consecutive days — first in the last week of November and again in the first week of December last year. But it did not come up for hearing and was posted for hearing after Christmas and winter vacation.

The SLP filed by the Goa government in July 2019 was last heard in July last year. Goa government has challenged the decision of the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal (MWDT) granting Karnataka 13.42 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) of water for its Kalasa-Bhandura drinking water-cum-irrigation project. The Tribunal Award was announced on August 14, 2018.
