Mhadei river inspection from July 4-8

PANJIM: Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Wednesday said that the Progressive River Authority for Water and Harmony (PRAWAH) committee will inspect the Mhadei basin from July 4 to 8.

Speaking to reporters at Mantralaya at Porvorim, Shirodkar said the committee will study the flow of the river water through the three riparian states namely Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Stating that it was important to hold the inspection in the monsoon to ascertain the diversion of the river by Karnataka, the minister said the inspection will be held in Maharashtra on July 4 followed by Goa on July 5 and 6 and Karnataka on 7.

Shirodkar said the next meeting of the PRAWAH Committee, which has its office in Goa, will be held on July 8 at Bengaluru. He said this is the first visit by the PRAWAH committee and later more frequent visits will be organised.

The minister claimed that the State has done its preparation thoroughly before the scheduled visit and added that chief engineers of all the three States will be part of the inspection team.

In April this year, Shirodkar had the PRAWAH Authority ask the three riparian states namely Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka to share with it visit plans for familiarisation with the Mhadei basin.

The committee has been appointed by the Center to oversee the compliance of the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal award and Supreme Court orders.
