Mhadei water dispute hearing on Feb 11, 2015

MAYEM: The next hearing of the Mhadei water dispute before the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal is scheduled on February 11, 2015, even as Karnataka government has not left any stone unturned to complete the work of the Kalsa-Bhandura project as early as possible.
It is learnt that during recent assembly session in Belgaum, the Karnataka government reportedly decided to continue the work of the project, which had been stopped after the State government was instrumental in getting stay to the project during the last hearing. The Goa government is also keen on handling the issue in a more competent manner during the next hearing.
Chief engineer Sandeep Nadkarni informed that necessary documents required for the purpose have been collected, while necessary procedures required have also been executed to make the case strong from Goa’s viewpoint.
It may be recalled that Karnataka government had started the work of the Kalsa project in 2006 to divert 7.56 TMC feet water from river Mhadei to Karnataka. Following this development, the then chief minister Manohar Parrikar strongly objected to the move and filed a writ petition before Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal. Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni was instrumental in getting a stay.
