Mining barge crashes into fishing boats at Kharewada, no injuries reported

VASCO: A cargo barge lost control and crashed into the fishing boats stationed at Kharewada Jetty, Vasco, on Sunday morning. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The collision caused significant damage to the fishing boats, and substantial financial losses for their owners.

On Sunday, a barge veered off course and crashed into the fishing boats at Kharewada. According to the boat owner, the vessel owned by Sesa Ghor experienced a technical snag and came drifting towards fishing boats anchored at the Kharewada jetty.

“We have put our boats on hold and haven’t used them in a while for a variety of reasons. We are having a hard time because of a shortage of workers and lack of diesel subsidies. Furthermore, a Sesa Ghor-owned barge ship drifted in and collided with our boats. We are paying for the accident even though I’m not sure exactly what went wrong—whether it was an engine failure or something else. The boats are constructed of wood, and there has been enormous damage,” said Simon Pereira, launch owner.

Six to seven boats were damaged in this incident. The owners questioned the accountability for the situation and demanded compensation for damages.

“We want the company to compensate us for the damages and also ask the authorities concerned to come and visit the site to assess the estimated loss,” Pereira said.
