Mining Co flayed for drying up water sources in Pissurlem

Taps have gone dry in Pissurlem and now even Kumbharkhan village is facing an acute water shortage. Villagers demand two tankers to supply water everyday. DEVENDRA GAONKAR visits this ‘parched’ village to find out more

Pissurlem villagers have lambasted the mining company for destroying the source of water in Pissurlem panchayat area.
All our village wells and river have gone dry and there is not a single drop of water in our wells. We have been facing an acute water shortage for the past one decades, point out Pissurlem villagers.
Besides, villagers also say that the mining company is not supplying water tanker in their village and that all mines around Pissurlem village belonged to Fomento Resources that has never helped villagers whenever they faced acute water shortage problem in the village.
For the past 15 days the taps have gone dry too in our ward. We have complained to the Water Supply Department, Valpoi, which earlier supplied water via water-tankers, which are irregular. We have to wait for  tankers for a long time, a villager Anant Porob said. Only one tanker comes each day to our village, which is large and one tanker water is not sufficient for all of us. We need at least two tankers of water per day in our village, says another villager Dattaram Naik.
The mining company in Pissurlem panchayat area has destroyed the water source of neighbouring villages of Sattari Taluka too, and now even Kumbharkhan village is facing the acute water shortage problem for the past five days, a Panch from Pissurlem village Sagun Wadkar points out.
The same situation prevails in Sonshi village.
Taking cognizance of the villagers demands the authorities have now agreed to provide two tankers to supply water.
“We will now supply two water tankers in Pissurlem village, per day. Besides, the work of direct water pipeline at Sonshi village too is going on, Assistant Engineer,  Water Supply Department, Valpoi Eknath Paste  said.
