PANJIM: The government has notified the Mining Dump Policy that seeks to regulate dumps of ore stacked outside lease areas. The State cabinet had earlier cleared the policy that seeks to regulate dumping of ore rejects in private and government property and wants to thwart the creation of additional dumps in the State.
The new policy will tackle the areas that have been used by various parties to store dumps without converting the land.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the policy was a land use policy.
The policy seeks to impose fees for land used for which it has a fee structure.
According to the policy, one has to pay Rs 120 per square meter on ore stored in private property and Rs 220 per square meter on dumps stacked in government property. But no forest land can be used for this and only authorized mining lease holders can apply for this conversion.
The State is projecting a revenue of Rs 300 crore through this policy.
The government states that mining dumps could occupy around 2,000 hectares of land. Government will confiscate the dumps if the said applications are not received by the government, within 30 days ~ which can be extended to 60 days ~ of the issuance of the notification as regards the policy for regulating the mining dumps on government and private lands, and related issues.
