Mining restart, need of the hour for unemployed Sanquelim locals

BICHOLIM: The Sanquelim Constituency which is represented by the Chief Minister has very few issues which the next representative would have to handle.

During his tenure as a Chief Minister and even before several projects had already taken shape in the constituency. Sanquelim has always been in the forefront of development as it is represented by powerful candidate.

Most of the people feel that in last one decade almost all the developmental works were completed in the constituency and what is needed is looking after its maintenance.

“Most of the work in the constituency has been completed and there are very few issues which need to be dealt with,” said Prashant Sadhle.

Several developmental work in form of Ravindra Bhavan, swimming pool, a new bus stand, sewage treatment plant project, road widening, new building for Sanquelim Municipal Council, primary health centre in Sanquelim, bridge at Amona, bridge connecting Vithalapur to Sanquelim, new market project and several other such projects have been completed in the constituency.

The only issue which needs to be looked into is that of mining. After the closure of mining, the several people were unemployed and lost their jobs. There is sizable number of people who are dependent upon mining in Pale, Surla and other areas.

They have been time and again demanding to resume mining and have now demanded for the formation of corporation for mining. Besides this, people feel that it would be better if an industrial estate comes up in remote villages of Sanquelim which would lessen the unemployment.

They feel that even small units like that of cashew industry would give employment to the local women.

As most of the major projects are completed in the constituency, people feel that some of the minor works have to be taken up on individual basis. “There are some minor issues such as water and electricity connections to individuals which should be solved by the panchayat with the help of the MLA,” said Sadhle.

The road in the market is in urgent need of hot-mixing. The main bridge connecting Bicholim and Sanquelim should be constructed and there is also a need to restore the Sanquelim Fort. The road from PHC Sanquelim to market has to be either widened or a divider should be placed to minimise traffic congestion. The ground near the bus stand can also be restored.
