PANJIM: Mining trader Kancha Gaunder, arrested for his alleged involvement in the illegal mining and theft of iron ore case, moved the court on Friday seeking bail. The plea will be heard on Monday.
Gaunder was arrested on June 29 and remanded in police custody for seven days. He was produced before the court on Friday when his remand was extended by another five days.
Investigations reveal that though he is registered with the Department of Mines & Geology, he would allegedly not file returns for the trade of iron ore and thus evaded dues to the State government.
“In connivance with others, he even excavated about one lakh metric tons of iron ore at Paikul, Valpoi mining lease. The lease was allegedly taken over by the Salgaonkar mining industries,” an official said.
