PANJIM: A 16-year-old girl from Morjim drowned at Morjim Beach on Saturday. She was studying in Class X.
According to Pernem Police Station Police Inspector Jivba Dalvi, the minor girl along with her three cousins had ventured into the sea late Saturday evening after 6.30 pm.
The police suspect that they were trying to avoid for being spotted by the police, who patrol the area and the lifeguards, in view of the ongoing State curfew.
Further, PI Dalvi pointed out that due to the recent Cyclone Tauktae the sea conditions are still rough and dangerous. All of them were pulled into the sea by the high current of tides and were brought back to the shore.
However, the minor girl was found in an unconscious state when she was brought to the shore. She was then immediately shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, where she expired while undergoing treatment.
Her other three cousins, who were rescued, are still receiving treatment.
On Sunday, the Goa Medical College conducted the post mortem examination and the body was handed over to her family.
PI Dalvi has requested the general public not to venture into the sea especially during rough sea weather and during the curfew period.
“The police cannot forcibly tell the public to stay inside their houses every time, they must willingly follow curfew too. Taking the advantage of darkness, this family went into the sea and precious life of minor girl is lost,” said PI Dalvi.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death. Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Praful Giri conducted the panchanama. Further investigation is in progress.
