Miraculous escape for hutment dwellers at Bambolim as two cylinders explode

PANJIM: Around 12 huts near a starred hotel at Bambolim, were reduced to ashes after two domestic LPG cylinders exploded here on Wednesday. However, there was no casualty as the hutment dwellers had gone out to work.

According to Fire and Emergency Services (FES), fire broke out after two cylinders exploded inside the huts.  The tin roof then collapsed due to the impact of the blast and the flames began to spread with the wind.

Panjim Station Fire Officer Rupesh Sawant said, “We received a call at around 11.40 am stating that a fire broke out as gas cylinders exploded. My staff removed the LPG cylinders from the huts which had not caught fire. Two fire tenders were pressed into service to extinguish the fire. The loss is estimated to be less than Rs 50,000.” 

Sawant said that there around 140 huts here and 12 caught fire. The Station Fire Officer said that he would write to the police and Electricity Department to probe into the exact cause of the fire.

The labourers employed with a real estate and construction private limited were staying in those huts, Sawant said.
