MAPUSA: Tension prevailed at Acoi-Mapusa after unknown miscreants vandalised the statue at Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Monday.
As the news spread life wildfire, locals and Shiv premis gathered in large numbers and condemned the incident.
The team of Mapusa police led by SDPO Jivba Dalvi rushed to the spot to maintain law and order at the venue. North Goa SP Nidhin Valson also reached the spot.
Meanwhile, heads of the several associations of Chatrapati Shivaji followers condemned the incident and demanded strict action against those involved.
“We want the police to nab the culprits within a week. If they fail to do so then we will call for a protest. Such incidents are not acceptable and it hurts religious sentiments,” they said.
Later in the evening, the vandalized statue was replaced with a new one.
SDPO Jivba Dalvi said, “We have collected CCTV footages from the neighbourhood and are verifying details and will catch the culprits soon.”
In a late night development, three suspects were handed over to the Mapusa police, who were later detained.
