MARGAO: Crying foul over the dwindling police administration in Colva jurisdiction, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Thursday demanded more staff for the Colva Police Station.
Churchill said Colva police station needs 10 head constables, 20 police constables and 2 vehicles.
The MLA demanded that the Government to ensure that the accused in the Betalbatim gang-rape case are sentenced to death.
“In the Gulf, they execute such criminals publicly, which instils fear. But in India some accused are set free due to lack of evidence,”  he said.
He said, “Rapes have increased and we shouldn’t be mute spectators. Tiatrists on stage criticise politicians for the crimes. I ask the people as to who has kept on rent these two lakh non-Goans in the coastal belt? Whether the government or people?
“I commend the police for nabbing the gang-rape accused. It is a fact that in coastal belt rapes are detected only if reported. There may be many victims, whose voices have been suppressed,” he wondered.
Churchill requested the parents to keep a check on their children to prevent the drug abuse especially among college students.
“Monitoring the college life of the children and checking their attendance every month is important,” Churchill said.
Raising the issue of high cut-off percentages in colleges, he said, “Students, who have secured 70% marks do not get admissions in commerce colleges today. I had requested the Education Minister to increase the number of colleges. If they don’t get admission what will be their future?” Churchill asked.
