MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has written to Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo and Director of Municipal Administration to inform the status of the Sonsoddo garbage dump.
The MLA said that it is an unwanted legacy and has to get rid of it soon.
Reignaldo reminded that he had raised the issue to find out on the progress of Sonsoddo garbage dump management after State government’s remediation plan.
“It is four months since my first letter dated July 23 addressed to Lobo and there is no reply from the minister on the outcome of the issue. I am answerable to the people of my Curtorim Constituency who are keen for a permanent solution to Sonsoddo garbage dump for good,” he said.
“I am sorry to state despite my request in the letters on the action taken in this critical issue by the concerned authorities including Margao Municipal Council,” complained Reginaldo.
“The populace in and around Sonsoddo garbage dump is dejected and frustrated as their health is severely affected by the poisonous smoke billowing from it and then fires starting at the site,” he said.
“There is feeling in the people of Curtorim Constituency and surrounding areas that Sonsoddo garbage dump is not a priority for the State government and hence it is not keen in solving the Sonsoddo garbage dump issue for good,” he added.
“I have been raising the Sonsoddo garbage dump issue for the past many years in the Legislative Assembly but to date the garbage issue has not been solved,” reminded the MLA.
“Let us not forget that the garbage dump is an unwanted legacy of the past that has affected the health and overall wellbeing of the people especially the elderly and the children residing in both Curtorim Constituency and in the surrounding areas,” informed Reginaldo.
