MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Saturday visited the site of the beach toilet project and assured that the work which was slowed down due to lockdown will now speed up.
Churchill said that the toilet project, which is long pending, has been tendered at a cost of Rs 1.7 crore and the work will commence now. I have visited the concerned department and asked them to start the work soon.
“I have asked the contractor over the work of Children’s Play Zone and to cut the coconut trees at the beach so that the children playing in the zone are safe from the falling coconuts.”
Earlier, there was uproar by an NGO over the cutting of the coconut trees at Colva Beach.
Colva Panchayat Panch Menino Fernandes said, “We have the businessmen, panchayat and also the people of Colva supporting the toilet project as we have seen people helplessly using corners and trees to hide and change clothes.”
“The toilet and changing room is a necessity at Colva Beach,” he added.
“The Colva Circuit Development Project worth Rs 11 crore is underway and the Colva creek improvisation project has been tendered at a cost of Rs 10 crore,” Churchill added.
“We will cover the creek and a warning has been sent to all the hoteliers discharging sewage into the creek. Their licence will be cancelled if caught discharging sewage,” warned Churchill.
“I had objected to the state-of-the-art Sewage Treatment Plant at Colva as the plant was supposed to discharge water into the sea,” he alleged.
Churchill said that the water will be pumped and released into the river now.
