MLA slams govt on water scarcity, COVID and taxi strike

PANJIM/MAPUSA: Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte on Thursday accused the BJP government of playing politics on water and alleged that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant failed to keep up to his of promise commissioning the water treatment plant at Porvorim by March 31.

“Increasing demands for water is clearly visible in the State but Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant says “Har Ghar Jal and Har Ghar Nal” but in reality there is no jal. Promises made in the Assembly and outside are not being fulfilled. Being at the tail end, parts of Porvorim face a major shortage of problems due to which this water treatment plant at Porvorim was planned”, Khaunte claimed.

“Chief Minister is on record where he promised that he will commence the 5 MLD plant at Porvorim by March 31. Today is April 15 but what we see is that even raw water has not reached the plant. If there was raw water then testing and other processes would have been done. With no raw water how can the treatment plant function,” Khaunte questioned.

Accusing the Government of playing politics on water, he said, “Commercial establishments are provided water and residential area are suffering. The tanker mafia has risen. Tankers supply water to five-star hotels but what we are supposed to do? We are serving four-day deadline to solve this issue.  In the next four days the problem has to be solved since Porvorim suffers badly during April and May. People here are saving a single drop of water”, Khaunte said.

On a different issue, the independent legislator alleged that the government is politicising and promoting “Tika Utsav” to divert public’s attention from the alarming rise in COVID cases in Goa.

He said that vaccinations don’t mean people can’t get the infection and thus more steps have to be taken to contain the COVID-19 virus. He also commented on the ongoing taxi strike and accused the Chief Minister of enjoying plucking chicken feathers and enjoying the pain of others while the taxi operators continue to protest for days at Azad Maidan.
