MLA urges govt to hike support price of paddy rice

MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Monday demanded to increase the support price of paddy rice and of the vegetable rates at the earliest.

In a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Aleixo Reginaldo stated the farmers of Curtorim Constituency and other parts of Goa have contacted him requesting an increase in the support price of paddy cultivated and grown in the State.

“It is given to understand that the upper limit fixed by the Directorate of Agriculture, Government of Goa is Rs 20 per kilo for a variety of rice like Jyoti (Rs 12 per kg), Jaya (Rs 11 per kg), Karjat (Rs 10 per kg), etc,” he stated.

The MLA mentioned due to the rising inflation and the high cost of cultivation of paddy Government of Goa would do a great service to Goan farmers if it increases the upper limit to Rs 30 per kg. Let us never ever forget that both rice and fish are the staple diet of an average Goans.

“Similarly, many Goans, especially the youth, have also started growing vegetables that are healthy in nature and chemical-free and devoid of harmful pesticides,” he added.
