PANJIM: Legislators on Tuesday asked the government not to politicise the Medium of Instruction (MoI) issue calling for a permanent solution to it. Many called for the issue to be dealt with since it was an issue that would affect the future of children in the State.
Leader of the Opposition Pratapsingh Rane said parents today were literate and were not going to settle for anything less than the perfect choice for their children.
“The MoI issue has been hanging in the air for many years and it is high time that it be solved. Parents today are no longer illiterate like during the pre-Liberation time. They have to judge for their children. We cannot play politics with it. It is the future of our children,” he said.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo criticized the Forum for Rights of Children to Education (FORCE) and the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) and their ways.
“Everyone has seen what the FORCE and BBSM have made of the issue. They’ve totally lost the purpose of the entire issue. These clashes have raised the issue again but there is a need to finish it once and for all,” he said.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai referring to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar as a teacher asked him to solve the issue. “Education is a topic that has touched a nerve with many in the State. We have already seen what FORCE did. The Chief Minister is a teacher himself and we expect him to get a solution,” he said.
Other issues related to the education sector were also raised, including making government teachers travel long distances to work, staffing patterns in schools, admission to the BEd and DEd courses and need to expedite funds for security in schools.
