MMC acts tough against garbage dumping at Fatorda

Slaps Rs 10K fine on Chovoth resident for dumping waste in the open

MARGAO: Perhaps for the first time, the Margao Municipal Council has slapped a hefty fine of Rs 10,000 on a resident of Chovoth-Fatorda for dumping waste in the locality, sending a message loud and clear that the civic body has decided to act tough against unscrupulous elements disposing waste in open places.
A week after Herald carried a report that another Sonsodo is in the making at Chovoth, the Margao Municipality has slapped the fine on the owner, even as Municipal trucks have started work of clearing the area of the waste.
That’s not all. Margao Municipal Chief Officer Naveen S L told Herald that the civic body has acted tough on the Chovoth owner to deter other unscrupulous elements from dumping waste in the open.
“When the civic body has started door-to-door waste collection exercise, disposal of waste in the open cannot be accepted. We will take on the violators,” he said.
Sources said the MMC chief officer on Friday went round the city throughout the morning session to personally see for himself the waste dumping in the open, especially along the roadsides. The chief officer also made his presence felt at the Sonsodo dump yard for an on the spot assessment of the situation.
