MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) needs to wait for a few more days to get the approval from the chief minister to transport the 10 tonnes of waste from Margao to Saligao Waste Treatment Plant.

Speaking to Herald, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said that the civic body is waiting for the approval.

Reportedly, the civic body has moved an application before the Goa State Pollution Control Board requesting permission to transport the 10 tonnes of waste from the jurisdiction of Margao civic body to the Saligao Waste Treatment Plant. This permission was sought in wake of the recent major fire incident reported at the Sonsoddo dump yard.

At the moment, the civic body is facing a tough time to handle the waste generated on a daily basis. The MMC has commenced the baling of the waste at the proposed multi-storied pay parking area, behind the municipal building. However, no space at the old waste treatment plant at Sonsoddo, has created a major problem for the civic body.

“I have been informed by the officials of the GSPCB that they are ready to grant the permission, but waiting for the CM’s approval. Once they get the approval, the issue will be resolved and we will be able to transport the waste to the Saligao plant,” Fernandes said.

Meanwhile, the civic body issued a tender notice pertaining to the supply and fixing of sheets for baling shed at Sonsoddo. This shed was totally gutted in fire on the day of the fire incident.
