MMC bans sale of fish outside market

VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has prohibited the sale of fish outside the fish market within one km radius in municipal area.

The council has handed the letter of assurance to president of Vasco Fish Market Caridade Pereira to temporary shift and re-shift the existing fish vendors in a new fish market once it is ready.

The order states, “It has been brought to the notice of the municipal chief officer that many persons are engaged in storage and sale of fish in the municipal jurisdiction within 1 km radius of the existing municipal fish market located in front of Commerce Centre in Vasco. Further the selling of fish within 1 km radius of the existing municipal market is prohibited and hence illegal in terms of Section 252 of the Goa Daman and Diu Municipalities Act 1968 and in terms of Bye-Law 2 (iii) of the Storage or Sale of Flesh or Fish Bye-Laws, 1971; and whereas the local fish vendors in the market have objected to the continuance of the said illegal sale for last many years. Therefore, under provisions of Section 252 of the Goa Daman and Diu Municipalities Act, 1968 read with Bye-Law 21 of the Storage or Sale of Flesh

or Fish Bye-Laws, 1971, the Chief Officer has ordered that the above activities of sale of fish within MMC jurisdiction within 1 km radius of the existing Municipal Market shall be stopped forthwith and in case of failure to abide by this order, action shall be taken in terms of the aforesaid provisions of the Act.”

The Chief Officer in a letter to Vasco Fish Market president Caridade Pereira has stated, “The existing fish market has been taken up for demolition and thereafter reconstruction of new premises. The work has been tendered and awarded by Goa State Urban Development Agency. As per the work order issued to contractor M/s Madhukar V Khandeparkar, the work shall be completed within next 1-2 years from the date of commencement. On account of non-vacating the existing fish market premises, the work could not be started in time and hence there has been delay”.
