MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has begun collection of segregated waste from its wards. It will be working with the Solid Waste Management Committee for the same.
Meanwhile, MMC Chairperson Babita Angle has flatly refused to give permission to Clean Margao Green Margao or any other person or organisation to start garbage collection drives in Margao. She said, “We do not want to be pressurised by any citizen and nobody can start a parallel system, which will create a mess.”
Regarding the MMC’s garbage collection plan, teams of MMC workers, engineers and inspectors will go around the wards and sensitise households about segregation.
The MMC has started segregation in Wards 1 to 10, and on Tuesday, it will begin an awareness drive on segregation in Wards 6 and 8. The drive will be held in Wards 9 and 10 on February 17, Wards 5 and 7 on February 18, and Ward 2, 3 and 4 on February 20 and 22.
The MMC team, including councillors, will go door-to-door to raise awareness and will also distribute pamphlets requesting segregation. The MMC has also appointed supervisors for each ward and the contact number of the supervisors will be given to the people.
“The MMC is planning to club the house tax and garbage collection fees soon and this exercise will be a trial,” said Angle.
