MMC begins to de-weed Maimollem lake

Vasco: The Mormugao Municipal Council has launched de-weeding of the Maimollem lake ina the port town.Through this initiative, two water channels will be cleaned so that there are no blockages. 

 The work has been started two months earlier to accommodate the drainage of rainwater and the project’s cost is estimated at Rs 1.70 crore. Vasco MLA Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar while inaugurating the works stated that the channel that carries Maimollem water will be cleared for the very first time. The de-weeding is significant as it is a prevent measure ahead of the monsoon.

Apart from MLA Salkar, Chairperson Girish Borkar, councillors Shami Salkar, Dipak Naik, Sandip Narvekar and Prashant Narvekar were also present. 

“This year two channels will be cleared for the first time with removal of overgrown aquatic plants. Wastewater from Mangor Hill, Shantinagar and other areas are discharged into the lake. No drainage issue was faced last year after aquatic plants near Tania Hotel were removed and the same will be done this year as well,” said Salkar.

Chairperson Borkar urged people not to throw plastic bags, bottles and other garbage into the nullah.
