VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council on Monday carried out an anti-encroachment drive on the highway at Mangor and Varunapuri.
The municipal staff, workers and market inspectors confiscated goods, handcarts, kiosks in the drive, which was carried out in the presence of Mormugao chairperson Leo Rodrigues and some councillors.
Rodrigues said that recently the municipality had removed the encroachers but they were back again. He warned the people not to indulge in illegalities and encroachments and asked them to remove encroachments on their own before the council acts. He said that these encroachments along the highway was causing traffic congestion and it was resulted in accidents.
He informed that the Vasco Traffic Cell had also written to the Mormugao municipal council to take immediate action against the encroachments at Mangor and Varunapuri. He said that handcarts and stalls are not permitted along the highways as per the judgment of the High Court of Bombay at Goa. He said that the drive against encroachments will continue in the municipal areas.
Councillor Narayan Borkar said that this was for the fifth time that the municipality had launched a drive against encroachments and asked if the encroachers had godfathers as despite several drives, the illegal handcarts and stalls resurfaced at the same location.
He said the municipality will try to find out the forces backing these handcarts and those hand in glove with the encroachers.
