MARGAO: Responding to the most recent fire incident at the Sonsoddo dump site, Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar stated that it was a minor incident and claimed that all fire safety measures are in place.
The cause of the fire at Sonsoddo is yet to be determined. However, according to the Chairperson, the civic body is diligently working to resolve the longstanding issues at Sonsoddo once and for all.
It may be recalled that a massive fire was reported at the Sonsoddo dump on Sunday midnight, and firefighters faced challenges in dousing the flames as they were unable to access the site.
Further commenting on the issue, the Chairperson suggested that the fire may have been caused by spontaneous combustion of waste stored at Sonsoddo, rather than a deliberate act of mischief.
He emphasised that, following the directives of the High Court, the civic body, in collaboration with the Goa Waste Management Corporation, is actively addressing all concerns related to the Sonsoddo garbage dump, including the legacy dump.
He added that significant progress has been made, with the removal of a large amount of waste from inside the shed and the commencement of bioremediation. Additionally, necessary infrastructure works, such as electricity supply, have been completed.
On another note, local residents around the Sonsoddo dump yard have called for increased vigilance by the civic body to prevent any further disturbances. The citizens allege that the civic body has completely failed in stopping the dangerous practice of setting fire to garbage at various locations. Shockingly, even the workers of the MMC are seen setting fire to waste in the morning, resulting in pollution, they pointed out.
