MMC chief orders inspection of buildings in Gandhi and New Market after slabs collapse

MARGAO: After complaints of slab pieces of Gandhi Market and New Market buildings collapsing, Municipal Chairperson Babita Prabhudessai has ordered an inspection of both the buildings. The chief officer has been asked to inspect the building as a part of the safety audit of the same.
The incidents of slab pieces collapsing inside Gandhi and New Market are not new. However, the traders complained that these pieces fell on the people coming to the market last week. The buildings are old, hence are weak to withstand the natural degradation.
The traders have already complained regarding the condition of the building. In a meeting she had called earlier, the chairperson acknowledged that the buildings are old now and need urgent attention failing which it poses a threat to people coming to the market.
“The buildings need to be inspected and a report has been sought,” the chairperson said.
The vendors from both the markets say that the structures of these buildings have become weak and if any of the sections of the building gives way it is going to cause major damage to people and property.
The chief officer said that the municipality would soon be asking the Goa Engineering College to conduct a detailed inspection of the same.
