VASCO: Taking serious note of the delay in building a retaining wall along Katem-Baina shore promised to fishermen staying in the area last year, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Lavina D’Souza has appealed to the State administration to fulfill the promise.
“Most of the people staying in Katem-Baina belong to the fishing community and so cannot operate far from shore. The government had assured a permanent solution to them but they still face the same threat as the authorities concerned did not give priority to the work,” D’Souza said.
Questioning the delay she said, “The people of Katem-Baina suffer sleepless night and this could have been avoided if the WRD officials had understood the importance of the work. Last year, many fishermen suffered a loss because of cyclonic winds followed by rains. Evicting people is not a solution, a retaining wall is needed on a priority.”
