MARGAO: Holding that Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Angle has violated the Motor Vehicles Act, the Director of Prosecution on Friday directed the police to take action against her.
The direction is issued following a complaint was filed against the chairperson for using a private vehicle with government vehicle notation on the number plate.
In his opinion, the Director of Prosecution Shiral Monteiro said, “Mrs Babita Prabhudessai (owner of the said car) is the chairperson of Margao Municipal Council and she is using her private vehicle instead of the official vehicle of Margao Municipal Council. However, she has not as yet received any official permission from Directorate of Municipal Administration to display the logo of ‘Chairperson Margao Municipal Council’ on her private vehicle.”
“By (displaying) the above logo on the number plate of her car Mrs, Babita Prabhudessai has violated Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 and has also contravened section 39 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as she has not followed the prescribed manner in which the registration mark has to be displayed,” Monteiro pointed out.
“Punishment for the said offence is prescribed under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the investigating officer to do the needful,” the direction reads as.
A complaint was earlier filed at the Traffic Cell, Margao that one private vehicle hearing registration No GA-08-M-8620 is moving in Margao area, having ‘Chairperson Margao Municipal Council’ written on its number plate.
