MMC chief’s family returns from Kashmir safely

MAPUSA: Anxiety turned to joy for MMC Chairman Sandeep Falari as seven members of his joint family, who were stranded at Pehelgam due to devastating floods in Srinagar, finally returned to Goa on Friday evening.

Speaking to Herald, a relieved Falari said that his parents along with his brother and his family had left Goa on September 1 morning for a tour of Kashmir.
“After visiting tourist places at Srinagar and Sonamarg, they left for Pehelgam on September 3 and they were proceeding to Gulmarg on September 5, when heavy rains started flooding the road toward Gulmarg,” said Falari.
“On the way, their car got stuck in the mud. The cars which were following them stopped and the car drivers lifted their car from the mud. As it was not possible to proceed further, they returned to their hotel at Pehelgam.
“From Saturday 6 onwards, the telecommunication system collapsed entirely and there was no power in Pehelgam till September 10. The hotel would start generator only at night. TV, mobile and internet facilities were not available,” said Falari.
“With food supplies getting depleted, the hotel management sought the help of the Indian army. Acting on their plea, the army airlifted the affected people from the hotel on September 10 and brought them to the Anantpura base camp, where tents were erected for those who were evacuated from the Srinagar floods.”
“My family members were later shifted from the Anantpura Base camp to Jammu by an army aircraft. They reached Jammu around 1 am. The family stayed in a hotel at Jammu on September 10 and arrived at Delhi on September 11.”
“On Friday, they left New Delhi in the morning and after brief halt at Mumbai, they reached Goa by a flight at 4 pm. We were very pleased to have them back home safe and sound,” said Falari.
