The Site behind the Navelim Church had been a nightmare for the Margao Municipal Council as waste from the neighbouring village found its way to this place as it is on the border of the Municipal Limits.
Though the waste disposed at the site is cleared on a daily basis, the quantum of the waste that is dumped here has been alarming.
People, more specially business outlets dump their waste in huge bags. Even chicken slaughter waste, dead animals are dumped here which becomes a health hazard for residents around and more specially tiny school students near this place.
A signboard prohibiting dumping of waste was installed at the site by SWMC Member & Ex Chairperson Savio Coutinho along with Navelim Sarpanch Frank Fernandes.
Coutinho stated that the place being in close proximately to the all important Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim and also since it is becoming a health hazard and a eyesore, to all the passersby and residents, people should not throw their waste at this point. He stated that truck loads of waste has been removed with the help of JCB and dozen workers and hoped the public exhibit proper civic sense and maintain the place clean. Since the ward no.16 is fully covered with door to door waste collection system, it is obvious that the waste thrown there comes from nearby village areas.
The Navelim Sarpanch appealed to the people of Navelim and neighbouring villages not to dump their waste at this spot as it is very close to the church. He said waste dumping at the site causes lot of hardships to the people going for mass and more specially the little primary students of the school nearby.
Frank said that Navelim MLA Avertano Furtado has already started deliberations on waste management at all Panchayat Level and a solution for Panchayat waste shall come up shortly.
