MMC CO assures to recover dues

VASCO: The Chief Officer of Mormugao Municipal Council on Tuesday assured to undertake recovery of outstanding dues from the government offices, public and other establishments.

“The garbage issue, pending recovery etc issues will be put in place for which the people should willingly cooperate with municipality,” opined new appointed Chief Officer Sandhya Kamat.

On Tuesday, Kamat took a round in the Mormugao municipal area and took a stock of the situation which she feels is worrisome.

Speaking to the reporters, Kamat informed that there is lot of pending outstanding recovery of dues from the government offices, shops, etc which need to be done on urgent basis. We also need to find a source of income for the municipality as there is no octroi, which the municipality used to get few years back.

She said that she interacted with the municipal office staff and got updated about various issues.

Kamat during her visit also observed that the garbage issue needs to be sorted out soon. Since last few days due to non clearing of garbage it has piled up in many places. Municipality workers are in the process of clearing it.

Kamat added that during her visit to the outskirts of the port town she learnt that some people from the panchayat area tend to dump waste in the municipal area.

When asked about the plans proposed to undertake the recovery, she said that it is the duty of the people to pay their dues as the municipality functions for their convenience. We will request them to pay outstanding dues and still if anyone is not willing to pay then we will have to resort in taking strict measures to recover the dues.

Commenting further on the wet waste management, Kamat said that the commercial societies in municipal areas can compost their own wet waste which will lower the burden of the municipality.

She said that there are some companies operating in the municipal areas which can also think of supporting the municipality under corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity.

“We are thinking about this option too,” she added.
