MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Deepali Naik has threatened to seal the SGPDA wholesale fish market if the illegalities and unhygienic conditions continue unabated.
The MMC Chief Officer said the municipal body has the power to intervene in the market to put the same in order if the illegalities continue. “So far, the Margao Civic body is only engaged in lifting away the waste generated in the wholesale fish market. Things such as cleanliness and hygienic have to be looked after by the SGPDA”, she told media persons.
The SGPDA has served a notice on the contractor with a direction to immediately stop all unauthorised fish cutting and fish cleaning activities and maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the market.
Doubts, however, are raised whether the stand of the PDA as well as the Margao Municipal body to stop fishing cleaning and cutting activity would help maintain cleanliness of the wholesale fish market.
People in the know said that a complete stop in the fishing cutting activity may result in the spread of the activity all around the wholesale fish market, further aggravating the problem.
Instead, it has been suggested in many quarters and the SGPDA and the MMC should set up a facility for the fish cutters to dispose off their waste, before the same is collected by the Municipal trucks.
Petitioner Savio Dias also agreed that a complete ban on fish cutting and cleaning might spread the activity outside the market area. “The SGPDA should create a facility where in all waste from the fish cutters go to one place, which can be collected by the Municipality,” Dias said.
